Victorian Fashion

Victorian fashion is a term indicating British culture from 1837 to 1900. The prominent factors which were included in this culture comprised literature, architecture, clothing and visual arts. In this article, we'll look at some of the Victorian fashion. In 1837, cloths were usually manufactured in northern England and Scotland in the mill town. The mills were not of very huge sizes though. Cloths were manufactured in comparatively smaller shops usually by their owners such as tailors and trades people.

People, who could not afford new cloths used to buy old and worn cloths and sometimes modify them according to their desires, which many times, gave them a beautiful look. But in 1900s, the system was changed totally. The cloths were not longer manufactured in smaller mills and by the shop owners. Instead, they were manufactured on a huge scale for a large number of populations with a great variety in colors, sizes and outfits. Modern machineries were invented and used in order to produce more precise and reliable design. Department stores were a consequent to this innovation.

The most common fashion among the Victorian ladies includes gowns generously sleeked fringes, lace and colorful ribbons. The silk dress had slanting shoulders and was very common among that period. Small laces' boots were usually worn for parties and outdoors. Plain and simple heeled slippers were used indoors. Layers of underclothes, petticoats were worn.

Undergarments were designed by hand using lace and other embroidery and were used as ornamental under-bodice. The front and back of these undergarments were usually not connected. Separate under sleeves, were worn with pagoda or bell-shaped dress sleeves. The bodices reached thighs. The cuirasses bodice was dipped deeper both front and back extending down to the hips giving the appear of a body as encased in armor. Later, the dress was with shoulder to hem panels.

These and a lot many other styles and designs made up the rich Victorian fashion which continued with new modifications and new designs to give the current inn fashion.
