Greek Fashion

Greeks are considered among the finest designers of cloths with respect to precision and care they put into practice. Its statues give a more deeper look and understanding in the field of fashion. One of the great Greek historians, Herodotus has told us a lot about the Greek fashion, its development throughout the period and its importance. The two periods dominant for Greek fashion which are usually discussed while discussing Greek fashion history are called as Archaic and Classical periods. The fashion styles common among both men and women in the Archaic period is known as Doric whereas in Classical period, the style was called as Ionic.

The most common clothing for women of Archaic period was Doric peplos. It was made from woven wool. Its approximate dimensions are as follows: wide of about 6 feet and 18 inches more in length of the height of wearer forms shoulder to the ankle. The fabric was round over and the extra material was folded up. Then, pinned at both shoulders and left the extra fabric to fall. You can also see the design in the pins with decorated heads. These pins were open pins.

This, in the words of Herodotus is explained in an uncertain story. He says that only one man was able to escape after the lost of the Athenian army. He went to Athens and told the wives of the people, who were died in the campaign. The women, in anger, removed their pins from shoulders and pierced into him. As a result, it was decided that Ionic dress will be the dress for the people.

Then Ionic dress, which was the later dressing for the people was thin linen instead of woolen fabric. Sometimes, silk was also used in place of linen. This dress, just like the previous one, was made using rectangle of the cloth. In contrast, its width was increased as compare to peplos. This time, there was no extra clothing to be folded. The wearer has only his or her own exact size in length.

The perspective, that Greek cloths were white in color is wrong so far. This misconception occurred when people decided that the statues were also of marble and borne of white color. Rather, the cloths were of off-white color. Some elegant dresses were woven with gold and silver threads.

At the end, talking about small children, they usually not used to wear any cloths except a cloth diaper. But in winter, of course, more fabric was wrapped around them in order to save from the cold.

This rich history of Greek fashion lead it to more modern and perfectly designed cloths which made it very popular among the clothing industry.
