Fashion in 1970s

The Fashion which is worn out in the late 60s become the continuation of fashion from the early 70s. The hippie look fashion like tie dyes and Mexican peasant is used to wear in early years of 70s. The mini skirts which worn in late 60s was also in continuation with an addition of dresses which were the length of the mid of calf known as "midis" and ankle length dresses known as "maxis", which were used in 1970-71. These skirts had reached an all time popularity by those early years of 70s. Tight fitted ribbed tops were worn by both of the genders. In 1971, very tiny, tight-fitting shorts, called hot pants, were a craze in fashion for young women and girls.

By 1972-74, the urban United States and Britain was inspired by super glam rock stars such as, Roxie Music Glitter and David Bowie. Women used to wear satin denims or trousers, which are usually designed with rhinestones, tight lure halter tops, and antique dresses made of velvet, bra tops which were sequined, hot pants of satin, and sporadically they used to wear boas of ostrich- feather which they drape over their turbans on their heads and on shoulders. The men often wore suits, quilted satin jackets, wide-legged denims or velvet trousers, silver astronaut-style outfits and rhinestone stud shirts. Their hair were softly layered, spiky or long, multi-coloured mullets. The shoes worn by both women and men were platform sole of about 2 to 4 inches.

By the mid of the 1970s, the fashion of hip huggers was vanished, swap by the high waist jeans and trousers with broad, flared legs. In Britain, they were mostly known as "Loon pants". These were worn till the late 70s when the straight jeans came into trend.

With the interest and increasing passion of disco, a radical change occur in mainstream clothing styles. All the clothing were changed to disco styles and especially that of men were changed a lot. Men started wearing three piece suits, which were wide flapped and flared trousers. Neck ties were worn wider one. Shirt collars become wide and broad and pointed one. In both women and men fashion zippered jumpsuits were worn. Clothing inspired by modern dance which is wrapped around skirts and dresses of rayon or jersey were worn. Tube tops and skin tight spandex were used by females.

The decade was popular widely and introduced many new kinds of styles and trends in fashion including, one piece swim suits of ladies, three piece gents suit, many new styles of hairs, the origination of punk subculture fashion. Many new styles of cosmetics were introduced and natural make-up for the day time become popular made by Cosmopolitan a famous cosmetic trend magazine. Thus the memories of fashion of 1970s are unforgettable.
